What Is the English Language Test Like for Naturalization?
Alongside the civics test, most naturalization applicants must also demonstrate a general ability to read, write, and speak English.
How it's generally assessed
Speaking ability is typically assessed throughout the interview itself, based on your ability to answer questions about your N-400 application. Reading is generally tested by having you read one or more sentences aloud, and writing by having you write one or more sentences from dictation.
Who may be exempt
Applicants who meet certain age and long-term residence thresholds may be exempt from the English requirement (though they typically still take the civics test, often in their native language). Applicants with a qualifying medical disability may also be eligible for a full waiver of both the English and civics requirements.
General preparation approaches
Practicing conversational English related to your own biographical information, reviewing common civics vocabulary, and doing mock interviews in English tend to be more useful than generic language study alone.
