Military Service Pathway

How Does Military Service Affect Naturalization Eligibility?

Military service can significantly change the naturalization timeline for those who qualify, and it's a pathway many green card holders don't fully realize applies to them.

Service during a period of hostilities

Members of the U.S. armed forces who serve honorably during certain designated periods of hostilities may be eligible to naturalize without meeting the standard residence and physical presence requirements at all, and in some cases regardless of age.

Peacetime service

Service members serving honorably during peacetime may still qualify for a reduced residence requirement compared to civilian applicants, generally requiring a shorter period of permanent residence than the standard 5 years.

Family members of service members

Spouses and certain family members of service members may also qualify for expedited processing or modified requirements in some circumstances, particularly when the service member is stationed abroad.

Posthumous citizenship

In tragic cases where a service member dies as a result of honorable service, current rules may allow for posthumous citizenship to be granted, which can also affect certain benefits for surviving family members.

Military naturalization provisions are detailed and depend on specific service dates and characterization of discharge. A member of our staff can help you understand which provisions might apply to your service record.
